Alle Olimpiadi di Londra 2012, quattro atleti in gara non rappresentano nessuna nazione. Il Comitato olimpico internazionale li ha omaggiati di completi a cinque cerchi per farli partecipare come “indipendenti”. Si chiamano Guor Marial (maratona), Churandy Martina (sprinter), Philip Elhage (tiro) e Rodion Davelaar (nuoto).
Il primo viene dal Sud Sudan, lo Stato più giovane del mondo. Nato nel 2011 con la secessione da Khartoum, il suo paese è già in guerra con il Nord e non ha fatto in tempo a creare un Comitato olimpico. Così Guor Marial – che per allenarsi si è rifugiato negli Stati Uniti – è stato lasciato a piedi. Lui, da buon maratoneta, ha continuato per la sua strada, e si è rifiutato di correre con la vecchia bandiera del Sudan. Il Cio l’ha autorizzato a partecipare come indipendente, ma non saranno in molti a tifare per lui durante la gara: la sua famiglia vive ancora in Sud Sudan, in un villaggio dove non arriva l’elettricità, e dovranno camminare 40 km per trovare una televisione.

Learning was paralysed in most of public schools yesterday as about 90 percent of teachers staged a countrywide strike to demand a pay rise. Not even processions by their students would soften the hearts of the angry teachers.
But the government was just as steadfast in its resolve, warning the teachers that action would be taken against those who took part in the outlawed strike. The Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, told a hastily convened press conference in his Dar es Salaam office that the government will withhold the salaries of all teachers who take part in the boycott.
Leaders of the Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU) moved fast to calm their members, advising them that no one will be penalised for not going to work because their strike met all the legal requirements.
